Nick yanked on the bolt, dropped in the cartridge, shoved the bolt forward, and somehow managed to drop it into place. His finger trembled beside the trigger.

The man had matured into quite an idiot, sorry to say. Though in reality, I didn’t feel as sorry as I probably should have. None of this was my fault, you see, and that’s what irked me. Had I the freedom I needed to perform my duties without interference, without adhering to Big Papa’s guidelines to the letter, I wouldn’t be here watching Nick toy with making the worst mistake of his life.

Sadly, Nick appeared beyond toying at this point. If only I could have been there for him—really been there, and not just as a watchful guardian but as a friend, someone he could talk to, fall back on when needed. I swear Big Papa thrived on making my job as difficult as possible. Game playing is what this boiled down to, and I abhorred playing games. You’re not to interfere, Papa forever reminded me. I’ll not warn you again, Zag. Allow the humans to make their own choices. Right, the one time I heed His advice and look where the grandiose plan landed my charge. I added Big Papa’s wonderful idea—instilling these beings with the power to choose—to my arguing points as I struggled to adjust to this too-natural locale.

Other than the occasional train, which ran along a set of railroad tracks to the east, and the noises from the campus, which sat easily a hundred-plus yards past the field, silence shrouded us but for a random birdsong, the buzz of bees, or the near undetectable flutter of a butterfly. Give me the hustle of an urban environment any day. I scoffed at my surroundings as I turned to view Nick’s target—his roommate, and possibly more if my charge wasn’t so uptight about his sexuality. Moving about the far end of the otherwise lonely practice field, Cody volleyed a black-and-white ball from one side to the other with ease . . . . Those tight white shorts of his are easy on the eyes too. With a resigned sigh, I forced my attention back to Nick.

No matter how I struggled, Rob refused to release me. Without a word, he marched to the valet’s station, demanded his key, and located his car-all with me in tow. After unlocking the passenger door and yanking it open, he shoved me toward the seat. I’d never experienced an angry Rob. Despite wanting to inform him of the bruises he inflicted, or scream about the humiliation he’d brought upon me in front of my friends, for the first time in my life–I was speechless.

As we exited the lot, my insides warred. Hurt? Pissed? Maybe I was in shock. Every inch of my body felt numb. I stared out the window. Never had I seen him like this. I should’ve gotten out when he walked around the car. Why’d I just sit here?

I glanced his way. Jaw tight, his teeth ground a frightening rhythm as he focused on the highway. Had I provoked him to physical rage? “Rob, where–?”

His cool, hazel-green eyes had mutated into a fiery, burnt orange gaze that he cast in my direction. Any moron should’ve recognized the intent behind that glare. He didn’t have to add his thoughts, but he did. “Shut. Your. Mouth.”

I did. And kept it shut throughout the twenty-minute ride.

Under the eve of a shanty, ma and pa roadside motel, Rob slammed the shifter into park and exited the car. Why didn’t I run?

My door whipped open. Rob stood glowering.

“Here.” He slapped a room key into my palm as he hauled me from the car. “You’re a ball of energy tonight. Find the room on foot.”

I stared.

He pointed to the right of the lobby.

I followed the sidewalk in the direction he’d instructed. Maybe I should’ve listened to Mom? I could turn around, bolt for the lobby, call the police. It’d take Rob a good minute to get out of his car and chase me down. I stood before room twenty-five as he pulled the car into the space behind me. Still, plenty of time to make a break. In a daze, I unlocked the door and stepped into the room.

The slamming of the car door and the clunk of the room door registered as my mind reattached to reality. I recognized the dead bolt click. “Rob-”

Air left my lungs, and I dropped the room key to the carpet as he twisted me around and pressed me against the wall. Pinning my arms above my head, he covered my mouth with his.

Tracing the seam of my lips, his tongue enticed my mouth open. He teased just inside my upper lip, retreated, and closed his mouth over mine without entering. Christ, I love when he teases. He backed away, jagged amber outlining a now calmer green in his eyes. His salt and pepper sideburns accentuated high cheekbones, as his gaze followed his hand roaming down the front of my suit pants. He paused, palm over the pulse behind my fly, and his eyes met mine. “You want me to talk more do you?”

How do you tell your boss, a man as gorgeous and chivalrous as Jasper Elementary Principal Valerian Riche, no?  That’s quite all right. “Kendra, let me explain.”

I unfolded my arms and clenched my hands into fists at my side. Wrong answer. Livid-no, beyond livid-I whirled around screaming. “Shut your damned mouth until you know why I’m angry with you!”

The louder I yelled, the faster he retreated. My fury halted only when he did. With his legs backed against the oak desk, his hands curled over its edge, him leaning as far back as possible without toppling backward, me, leaning over him, I stopped. Everything stopped-my rant, Val’s movements, my ability to breath, and time.

I fixated on his less-than-confident bottom lip, wanting nothing except another taste, his touch . . . . The whites of his eyes grew, but he didn’t blink as I kicked his feet apart, straddled a leg, and hovered inches away from him.

One finger between his collar and tie, I loosened it from his neck and edged the knot down the tie’s length. Our mutual silence balanced on matching stubbornness. I slid the tie through his stiff collar and pulled it free, catching a lightening quick streak of trepidation in those marble-black eyes. From the mist collecting above his brow, I figured he probably hoped I hadn’t noticed.

I straddled him, hovering less than an inch above his thigh. My skirt bunched higher as I closed the distance until I was sure we exchanged breath. “You want to kiss me, don’t you?” I lifted his right hand and cinched the quickly lineman-knotted tie around his wrist.

Anticipation danced in his eyes. Yet he remained as stone when I changed position with a hike of my leg. He thought his will stronger than mine. I pressed between his parted thighs and wiggled until I loomed inches from his chest. Lifting and moving his free hand to join the other, I secured his wrists behind him.

His push upright ended with me pressing my forehead in defiance at a hardened pec. I held my post and moved quickly to unfasten his belt and pants. The shifting muscles in his chest told me he worked hard to stifle a chuckle. He thought he had me, and almost did, as my inhale carried his fresh-pressed scent to delight my palette.

“Do you like it like this, Val?” I stepped back, tossed him a seductive gaze, and withdrew the belt from his pant loops.

His lapels reached higher with each breath, but I received only a twitch of his right brow in response. I kicked off my shoes, lowered myself to my knees, shoved his feet together, wound the belt twice around his ankles, and buckled it tight.

As I hesitated, my fingers dawdling on the clasp of his pants, he whispered my name. I jumped up, straddled his bound legs, and leaned in for the kill. The tips of our noses brushed. Our eyes locked in a battle stare. “Tell me you like this, tell me you want it.”

With my crotch brushing over his clothed erection, I slid my tongue across the seam of his lips, accentuating the velvety touch of my words. “Say it.”

A single bead of sweat trickled along his rough cheek. I grabbed two fistfuls of hair and pulled him closer. I licked a trail from his chin to the bridge of his nose before ghosting my painted lips over one set of lashes. “You like?” My words floated as smooth as my breath, as soft as the wisps of lashes at my lips.

I lost my grip and stumbled backward as he reared upright with a start. “For God’s sake, Kendra! Suck my goddamned dick!”
